Before your iPhone repair: a practical checklist

A simple checklist for your backup, fault details and repair booking.

Published 3 October 2026 · iWant Gadgets · 4-minute read

A phone repair starts before you hand over the device. A little preparation helps you explain the problem, protect your information and understand what happens next. Use this checklist before requesting an assessment at our Sea Point store.

1. Back up what matters

If your iPhone still works, make a backup before your visit. Apple provides options using iCloud, a Mac or a Windows PC. Choose the method you can complete and check that it finishes. Follow Apple’s backup instructions for the steps that match your setup.

If the phone will not switch on or the screen prevents access, tell us before booking. Explain whether you have a recent backup and whether recovering information is your priority. Do not assume a hardware repair will preserve every file: our repair policy notes that a restore or format may be needed to complete work.

2. Write down the fault

“It does not work” is a starting point, but a few details make an enquiry more useful. Include the model, when the fault began and what you see or hear. Note any drops, liquid exposure, previous repairs or error messages.

For an intermittent problem, describe when it happens: while charging, during calls or when opening a particular app, for example. A short video made with another device may help show the symptom. Avoid capturing private messages or account information.

3. Keep account details private

Apple advises keeping your Apple Account password, device passcode and security details private. If software support requires you to enter credentials, do so yourself and remain present. See Apple’s service-preparation guidance.

Do not put passwords, unlock codes or banking details in our booking form or a WhatsApp message. Ask us which preparation steps apply to your assessment before changing account or Find My settings. Apple’s linked instructions describe its own service process; they do not establish iWant Gadgets as an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

4. Ask about the assessment and quote

Before approving work, ask what is being assessed, which parts may be required and when a quote can be confirmed. A description or photo alone may not establish the cause of a fault.

At iWant Gadgets, repair feasibility, pricing, parts availability and turnaround are confirmed after assessment. A R100 consultation fee applies if the device cannot be fixed, as agreed before assessment. Ordered repair parts require a 50% deposit, subject to our repair policy. Read that policy for the full warranty and deposit terms.

5. Plan your visit and keep a reference

Use our online repair form and select Sea Point. After a successful submission, save the booking reference or use the Copy reference button. A request is not a confirmed appointment; our team will contact you about assessment arrangements.

Make a note of any charger or accessory you intend to leave with the device. Ask whether it is needed for the reported fault. After collection, check the repaired function and keep your job or invoice details for follow-up questions.
